You know you are Haitian when..

1- You know what “Voodoo” means
2- You have yellow squash soup every Sunday morning
3- The first name of at least one woman in your family is: Marie
4- You would never enter a room with a big black butterfly inside
5- You eat rice and beans or black rice everyday
6- Your parents believe that “Palma Christi oil” treats everything
7- You believe in Zombie even if you say no
My mother’s first name is Marie and I know an Haitian family of nine where every child has Marie as first name: boys and girls.
This is so true that we love rice and beans and black rice.- That we are superstitious as a nation.
Many books have been written and many movies produced about Voodoo or zombification in Haiti: some realistic, some not.
Wade Davis: “ The Serpent and the Rainbow”, 1985. (Book) and the movie in 1988 by Wes Graven.
Maya Deren: “Divine Horsemen: the Living Gods of Haiti”, 1953. (Book)
